FRP for Smelting & Refining

Off-gas duct, gas cleaning, dampers and acid-plant equipment for high-temperature, corrosive service.

Smelter and refinery off-gas handling is one of FRP’s toughest jobs — and one Crimar has been doing for decades, supplying gas-handling duct, scrubbers, dampers and acid-plant equipment for non-ferrous smelters and refineries.

The challenge

Off-gas carries sulfur dioxide and trioxide, acidic condensate, abrasive dust and heat — often under vacuum and constant thermal cycling. Some duct operates at temperatures approaching 390 °F (≈200 °C), where unprotected metal corrodes rapidly and coatings fail.

How Crimar helps

We engineer vinyl-ester — and, where warranted, carbon-reinforced — FRP duct and equipment for these conditions, with corrosion barriers and veils matched to the gas chemistry, and structural designs that account for vacuum, thermal expansion and external wind and maintenance loads. Decades-old FRP duct still in service is the best proof the approach works.

What we supply

Materials & construction

High-temperature epoxy vinyl ester is the workhorse for off-gas duty; carbon-fiber reinforcement is offered for select high-temperature duct where added stiffness and lower thermal expansion justify it. Fire-retardant grades use antimony trioxide; corrosion barriers and veils are matched to SO₂/SO₃ and acid-condensate exposure.

Standards

  • ASME RTP-1
  • ASTM D3299 / D2996
  • SMACNA (thermoset FRP duct)

Representative projects

A selection of projects that reflect our experience in this sector:

  • 48″–102″ FRP duct systems — Phelps Dodge Playas smelter
  • 72″ & 96″ duct and butterfly dampers — ASARCO smelter
  • FRP off-gas duct engineered for service up to ~390 °F
  • Gas-cleaning FRP equipment for a non-ferrous smelter, Qinghai, China
