FRP Belt Guards & Pulley Covers for Mining Drives
Lightweight, corrosion-proof machine guarding for conveyor drives, pulleys and electric motors — moulded in fiberglass, gel-coated in safety colours, and built to survive the wash-down and dust of a mine site.
The challenge
Guarding is a safety requirement on every rotating drive in a plant — but in mineral processing it is also a maintenance problem. Steel belt guards and pulley covers sit in exactly the worst place: constant dust, slurry splash, high-pressure wash-down and, around leach and SX-EW circuits, acid-laden air. They rust at the fasteners and edges, need repainting, and become heavy, awkward panels that crews are reluctant to remove and refit correctly during maintenance.
A guard that is heavy, corroded or seized is a guard that eventually gets left off. The engineering brief on this class of work is simple to state and harder to deliver: make it corrosion-proof, make it light enough for one or two people to handle safely, make it obviously visible — and make it fit the existing machine exactly.

The Crimar solution
Crimar fabricates these guards as moulded fiberglass assemblies rather than folded and welded steel. The laminate is built up to suit the span and impact duty, contoured to wrap the pulley or belt run, and finished with a heavy gel coat in a specified safety colour — so the corrosion protection is part of the material, not a paint film that chips and has to be maintained.
Each cover is supplied as a complete, ready-to-install assembly: the FRP body plus steel handles, button plugs and plated fasteners, so maintenance crews can lift, remove and refit it by hand without special tools. Because the parts are moulded, repeat units come off the same pattern — a genuine advantage where a plant has dozens of identical drives and wants one spare that fits them all.
Why FRP instead of steel
- Will not rust — no repainting, no corroded fasteners, no rust staining on the machine below.
- Roughly a third the weight of steel — easier and safer to remove and refit, which means guards actually go back on.
- Colour is moulded in — safety yellow or plant-standard RAL colour in the gel coat, stable under UV and wash-down.
- Non-conductive and spark-free — an advantage around electric motor drives.
- Repeatable — moulded from a pattern, so units are interchangeable across identical drives.

Working from your drawings — or your machine
Most guarding work reaches us in one of two ways. Either the OEM or engineering group issues a detail drawing and workshop specification and we fabricate to it — including the inspection, material-traceability and surface-finish requirements written into that specification — or a plant sends dimensions and photographs of an existing steel guard that keeps corroding, and we reproduce it in FRP.
