A record copper price makes headlines. What matters more to anyone who supplies a mine is what that price does to capital budgets — and in August 2026, the answer became visible in contracts rather than commentary.
Copper set fresh records this month, with LME prices reaching roughly US$14,455 per tonne and COMEX touching US$6.77 per pound on 7 August. The drivers are structural rather than speculative: AI data-centre buildout, grid investment, electrification, and a supply base that cannot respond quickly.
But price is only the thermometer. The more useful signal is that miners have started committing capital to long-dated projects again.
Three signals that capital is moving
Resolution Copper (Arizona). The Rio Tinto / BHP joint venture awarded approximately US$110 million in contracts to Major Drilling America and Redpath USA to advance exploration and underground development — deep directional core drilling, conversion of two 7,000 ft shafts from sinking to development, and a new mine station roughly 6,800 ft below surface. These are early commitments under an approximately US$500 million investment program that followed completion of the Final EIS, Record of Decision and congressionally mandated land exchange.
Salobo, Brazil. Vale Base Metals is proceeding with a coarse particle flotation (CPF) circuit at its Salobo Copper Complex — approximately US$215 million gross capital, with start-up pulled forward to the first half of 2028, about a year earlier than previously projected. The CPF circuit adds around 6 Mtpa, lifting total processing capacity toward approximately 42 Mtpa, and is expected to add roughly 30,000 t/y of copper and 15,000 oz/y of gold.
Automation moving from pilot to standard. ABB is extending automation proven at Vale’s Conceição II model plant to further operations, while technology developers continue to attract funding for GPS-denied underground autonomy. Mining digitalisation is shifting from isolated software purchases toward integrated planning, simulation, equipment and operations systems.
The pattern underneath
The sequence is familiar to anyone who has lived through a mining cycle: copper price rises, mine economics improve, marginal projects clear hurdle rates, boards approve capital — and engineering, equipment and construction demand follows.
The important detail in 2026 is where that capital is going. Resolution is underground development. Salobo is a flotation circuit. ABB’s work is inside processing plants. This cycle is not only about moving more rock — a large share is going into processing capacity: flotation, grinding, classification, thickening, filtration, solvent extraction and water treatment.
That distinction matters, because processing plants are where the corrosion is.
Why concentrators are hard on equipment
A concentrator or hydrometallurgical circuit combines almost every condition that shortens equipment life:
- Abrasive slurries in constant motion
- Process water with chlorides and variable pH
- Reagents, flocculants and flotation chemistry
- Sulfuric acid in leach, SX-EW and acid-plant circuits
- Acid mist, SO2/SO3 and humid off-gas around smelting and tank houses
- High-pressure wash-down and, at altitude, aggressive UV and thermal cycling
Carbon steel handles the loads but not the chemistry. Stainless and exotic alloys handle the chemistry at a cost that is hard to justify across large-diameter tanks, launders, covers and ductwork. This is the gap fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) has occupied in mining for decades: the corrosion resistance is a property of the laminate itself, not a coating that has to be maintained.
What this means if you are specifying equipment now
1. Long-lead items get longer
When several major projects sanction inside the same window, fabrication capacity tightens. Large-diameter FRP tanks, vessels and ductwork are engineered-to-order — they are not pulled off a shelf. Engaging during FEED, rather than after the P&IDs are frozen, protects the schedule.
2. Resin selection deserves real attention
“FRP” is not a single material. Vinyl ester, novolac vinyl ester, isophthalic polyester and dual-laminate constructions behave very differently in 98% sulfuric acid, in SX electrolyte with entrained organics, or in humid SO3 off-gas at temperature. Specifying the medium, concentration, operating and design temperature, and the pressure or vacuum condition — rather than a wall thickness — produces a better vessel.
3. Documentation is part of the deliverable
Owners and EPCs on projects of this scale expect design to ASME RTP-1 or ASTM D3299/D4097, ISO 9001 fabrication, inspection and test plans, third-party witness where specified, and a complete Manufacturing Data Record at handover. The takeaway
Rising copper prices are the visible part of this story. The part that matters commercially is that mining companies have started approving long-dated expansions and new processing capacity again. If that continues through the next two to five years, the beneficiaries will extend well beyond copper miners to the engineering, equipment, automation and corrosion-resistant-materials supply chain that builds and maintains those plants.
For anyone specifying process equipment in that chain, the advice is unchanged and slightly more urgent: define the service conditions properly, choose the material system for the chemistry, and start the conversation with your fabricator early.
